Well, it is the time of the year where chaos happens and horse flesh and human flesh move south for the winter. While Kentucky essentially shuts down for the winter, we will be doing things a little unorthodox as we have decided to send the bulk of our racing horse flesh to Parx Racing at Philly Park. Gondorf, Big Shake, and Surfer Rosa will join Mr Mojo Risin and Albin and stable at the Classic Mile in Ocala, Florida for the winter
Prospect Knight had victory snatched from him at the late stages of today's 6th race at Philly Park. Chuck, our trainer, noted that he was doing really well and thought he would run huge, and more times then not when you have a 3 length lead at the 1/16th pole at Philly you are gonna get home but he just got a little tired at the end and we will bring him back to run on the 20th before he gets a little vacation down in Ocala.
The Magic Bus is scheduled to arrive at Philly on Friday as we target a maiden race for him on December 10th. Today's work went really well and he has comes out of his maiden voyage well. He should run a more complete race with now knowing what racing is about.
Rochelle Rochelle came back from her layoff to run a much the best race two weeks ago, only to finish 2nd to a horse that got a perfect trip. Her, along with Prospect Knight, will be well spotted for their next races and both should go off as favorite.
Big Shake came out of his race in good order and the race did him alot of good. Amazingly, there were many positives to come from a last place finish. The speed that he showed was a surprise, and he had some grit at the 1/4 pole only to stop on his less then preferred surface. He will return down at Tampa Bay Downs on New Years Eve.
Mizz Liza didn't take to the east coast all that well this time around and she will go down to Ocala with a couple of Chuck's 2 year olds and get a quick break and she will run once at Tampa as a conditioner, and then be ready to have a successful spring.
Surfer Rosa returns this week from her little break and sickness and she will point towards a late January start at Tampa Bay Downs.
Chuck was hesitant to work Gondorf today because of track condition. We have him in good order and given his feet can be an issue at times, we have decided to get to Florida and work him over the lawn a couple times before his start at Tampa Bay Downs.
We are eagerly awaiting for Chuck to start training Mr Mojo Risin and for the return of Albin. Both horses are currently in full training with Shane Tripp and will arrive with Chuck next week sometime and we are hoping to debut Mr Mojo Risin towards the end of January.
Top Royelle (pregnant to Cactus Ridge) and Wundelia (pregnant to Yes Its True) are en route to a farm near St. Louis. They need to be in Illinois by December 1st for the foals to be considered Illinois breds. Both mares should foal within the first two weeks of March. Afterwards foals, they will go back to Kentucky to their home, Arundel Farm.
Hope everyone has a good holiday season.

Prospect Knight a WINNA!

Prospect Knight became our second 2 year old winner of 2010. Racing 4 wide on both turns he took control down the lane in the first race at Philly Park to win the 25k maiden claiming event. It is very nice to have options, and we have them now with him. Philly has a 25nw2 race in its book but it is a little too quick so we will probably wait for that next one.
Mizz Liza looks to make it 2 in a row for BGR as she tries to break her maiden on Monday at Philly Park. If there is ever a race she will win, it will be this one.
Gondorf came out of his race a little banged up and we will point for a 50k maiden claimer at Churchill post Breeders Cup.
The Magic Bus put in his 2nd to last work before his debut on November 12th and it was termed 'great'. In company out of the gate, he broke sharp and was taken in hand by jockey Shane Sellers and just sat off them to overtake them at the quarter pole and finish willingly. He will work Thursday of this week under the TwinSpires. The picture below was taken by a friend of Chuck's when he was warming up.

Big Shake came out of his race and we will be pointing towards a race towards the end of the Churchill meet with him. He has the opportunity to be a very useful horse for us this winter down at Tampa.
Great news out of Ocala in that Mr Mojo Risin has been training forwardly for his debut around the first of the year and Albin has made his 'Ali' like return to the track. We are taking things slow with him and trying to keep him under wraps while he continues to recoup from surgery.
Tampa Bay's first condition book came out and we have the opportunity to be active in December, unlike last year. The Magic Bus, Gondorf, Big Shake and Surfer Rosa will be going down to the Classic Mile to train for the winter, and Mr Mojo Risin and Albin will join those four when Chuck arrives down there towards the first of December.

Its Keeneland time!
As you get older, you tend to miss that feeling of when you were younger and waking up Christmas morning with a ton of presents under the tree, fortunately the excitement of going to Keeneland provides that very same feeling. Going there provides an old school racing experience with alot of the newer, more tech savvy perks.
Gondorf drew into the 3rd race on Saturday in a 9 furlong polytrack race. We have always wanted to try him on the polytrack as he has always trained well over it but we never had the opportunity this summer. While this race has drawn the interest from the whose who of horseman, we are confident that he will run a big race.
The two horses as Philadelphia Park responded in their 2nd starts over the track. Prospect Knight made his two turn debut and ran 4th. While tiring, his performance was promising. With Tony Black retiring, he will get a jock change and race back near the end of October.
Rochelle Rochelle finished 3rd as she was much fitter this time around. She stumbled very bad out of the gate and ran a very good race. She should be tough next time, which will also be at the end of October.
The Magic Bus had his recent work aborted as the standing water on the track caused him to be tentative in his pre-gallop. He will work back this Friday and continue onwards to his debut, which will be at Churchill Downs on Halloween.
Big Shake continues to not like the dirt in the morning and is ready to run. He will be run at Keeneland next Saturday.
Mizz Liza has trained well with the addition of blinkers. Her last race was extremely puzzling and we are hoping that the blinkers will help her focus and give her some confidence. She is scheduled for next Friday at Keeneland.
Surfer Rosa's plans have changed as we have moved up her scheduled turn out time as she has gotten sick. The plan was to run her at Keeneland this weekend and go two turns at Churchill but she has had a long year and we have decided to do it now and she will come back when the crew leaves for Florida, which should be around December 1st.
We are extremely excited to go out to Arundel Farm on Sunday to see both IL bred babies (Dehere and Johar Fillies) and the two pregnant mares, Top Royelle and Wundelia. Pictures will obviously be taken and posted!
Here is hoping for a fun, exciting, competitive, and profitable weekend.

With departure comes promise
As the Arlington meet closes and our horses ship out on Thursday to Churchill Downs Training Center for the fall, you can't help and look back on the Arlington meet and consider it unsuccessful. It is considered our target every year and our stable just couldn't get it done. You try and plan what you can, but you come back to reality pretty quick and realize that you are dealing with animals.
As the final quarter of the year begins, our stable roster has gone through significant changes from Q2 and even Q3. We have streamlined our operation to be as cost efficient as possible, but this has cut down on our starts and earning potential. We have approximetely 16 more starts this year and hopefully we can make the most of them. We have also made the decision to not add any yearlings to the roster as a majority of our past expenses within a year have been the addition of horse flesh.
Prospect Knight is our next starter and he has drawn into a great spot at Parx Racing at Philly Park on Saturday. Saturday is a big racing day for Philly Park as the Penn Derby is being run, and the racing office has increased purses for the day. We are running in a maiden claimer with a price tag of 40k, and the purse is 51k. It is an unbelievable opportunity to earn some good money and entries for the day (123 entries, 10.25 avg per race) show that horseman will run their horses when cash is available. The Pennslyvania horseman and politicals really 'get it' there.
The opposite end of the spectrum is Illinois. Arlington Park has had by all accounts a horrible meet and it continued to get worse. Gondorf was stuck in the middle of a battle between the racing office and upper management as upper management restricted the amount of money available to the racing office to give away. This led the racing office to 'hold' Gondorf's race, which has 10 horses consistently entered for a couple days because they couldn't give away the higher purses that an MSW offers. It is unbelievably frustrating to know that your horse is sitting on a race, you enter, the race fills, but then they are not allowed to use the race. This business is hard enough as it is, one minor thing sets you back for weeks at a time, yet it feels like racetracks run by corportations just don't understand that racing is the centerpoint.
Gondorf ran on Sunday and while it was a good race, you always hope for a better placing. He came out of the race in good order and will finally get an opportunity to run on the polytrack, at Keeneland on October 16th.
The Magic Bus made it back to the work tab Sunday after we gave him a little time to get through some baby stuff. He has matured and grown and we are hoping to have him ready for an MSW race at Keeneland on October 16th.
Surfer Rosa came out of her work with her lungs full of mucus and we will treat her aggressively to have her ready for October 16th. We decided to skip a potential race at Kentucky Downs to focus on our primary target since we started breaking her, a Starter allowance race going 6.5 furlongs on the polytrack at Keeneland.
Mizz Liza threw in a weird race the other day as she never settled. She was antsy from the get go and we really can't figure out why. We did all the processes and checked everything and she is OK. We will give her some downtime and focus her for a race towards the end of the Keeneland meet on the polytrack, hopefully going 9 furlongs.
Rochelle Rochelle got really tired in her return to dirt on Sunday. She has been the project horse since we started with her, and time is ticking. She is projected to run a much better race next time, October 11th at Philly Park.
Mr Mojo Risin is reportly doing well as he progressed under the tuteledge of Shane Tripp down in Ocala, Fl. We are hoping to have him ready to run January 1st at Tampa Bay Downs.
Albin has progressed slowly and while we are hopeful for a January 1st return, it is probably going to take a little longer then that.
The mares and foals are doing great. They are doing wonderful and were just nominated to The Jockey Club. It is great having some decent looking IL breds in the pipeline, now only if they ran races for yearlings.

Excitement high!
With today being September 1st (whoa, where did the time go) it also close to the end of the racing season at Arlington Park, as well as excitement within the BGR stable. Our stable is finally in full racing mode after several setbacks this year and with all the horses healthy, it is somewhat hard to contain ourselves.
Gondorf ran by far the race of his life in defeat last Friday as we rose him up in class and he responded. Getting hounded the whole race, he put away the other speed horse away and opened up 3 lengths at the 1/4 pole to get run down by a closer to lose the race by a length. It was a gritty effort where he showed us he wanted to be a racehorse. We have been patient with him as his breeding is more geared towards being an older horse. Unfortunately he really isn't concerned with his own well being as he continues to misbehave in his stall, daily. :) He improved several lengths from his last start, getting a 79 Beyer, and will be the favorite in his targeted race on the 17th at Arlington Park, which is most likely our last starter of the meet.
Mizz Liza and Surfer Rosa are continuing to prepare for their respective starts which will be at Kentucky Downs on September 13th. They both have kept their condition and look great.
Prospect Knight and Rochelle Rochelle leave tomorrow for Parx Racing, which is formerly Philadelphia Park.
Big Shake works tomorrow morning and will target a race at Kentucky Downs towards the end of September.
The Magic Bus is back in full training and had a visit with the back doctor and all systems are a go for him. He has gone to the track the last couple days and he looked great. Keeneland's condition book came out today and October 16th has been penciled in for the Franchise's debut. Depending on some of our September starts, we could have as many as 3 starters that day.
Reports from Shane Tripp down in Ocala have Mr Mojo Risin doing well and training forwardly. Albin is still on stall rest and we will be starting a medication cycle with him to help him along.

Picture time
Well, not the REAL good ones(winner circle pictures) but of our first two tries at breeding.
Top Royelle's Dehere filly

Bob's Bean Johar Filly

I will admit that I have taken a preference to Top Royelle's filly, she looks amazing. Bob's Bean's filly has really caught up as she was born about a month later then Top Royelle's filly.
Both fillies look absolutely superb and that is a testament to how good of a job Arundel Farm does with them.

Trucking along
We haven't had the most successful last two weeks but things are turning around.
After Surfer Rosa's win we took a chance and ran her back quickly on Arlington Million Day and while she closed strong, the distance was just a touch short for her. Ultimately the longer the better and she will learn from the race. We will target a turf race at Kentucky Downs and then focus on our ultimate goal, winning a race at Keeneland with her in October.
Mizz Liza got completely sawd off in the stretch by an irresponsible Inez Karlsson, who ended up being DQed, and all in all Liza ran a great race. Her first race on the turf was very promising and we will be looking to run her a real route of ground, 10.5 furlongs at Kentucky Downs. Every race she has run in the jockey has needed to have the outrider help pull her up because while she might not be quick enough, she can run for miles.
Prospect Knight is another that took a beating in what was his debut race. He broke good and then both his front end and rear end were bumped, almost causing him to be completely stopped, and then he got moving forward and starting making a run until another horse pumped him at the 3/8's pole, and then at the 1/4 another horse came over on him and he basically looked like he had enough. He will gain alot from that experience and move his tack to Philadelphia Park this winter.
Gondorf is entered on Friday at Arlington Park and he has been given a 6/1 chance by the morning line maker. While there is alot of speed within the race and we have been hoping for a while to 'try' him on the poly, he should give a good account for himself.
The Magic Bus was flattered yesterday as his workmate (Wheemaway from the Austin Smith barn) ran a real good 3rd place in his debut race, a MSW going 7 furlongs on the polytrack. The Magic Bus is getting over some minor issues and we are hoping to debut him at the end of the Arlington meet.
Big Shake and Rochelle Rochelle continue on a steady work pattern and both have looked great recently while training. We are hoping to run towards the end of the Arlington meet or at the short Kentucky Downs meeting.
Both horses, Albin and Mr Mojo Risin, are progressing within the hands of Shane Tripp and will join up with Chuck's Ocala string when the rest of thes stable arrives sometime in November.
No news is good news for both Top Royelle (In foal to Cactus Ridge) and Wundelia (In foal to Yes Its True). I am hoping to get some pictures of the Johar Filly and Dehere Filly sometime this week while the weather is nice in Kentucky. They have recently been weened and been doing well.

Surfer Rosa wins!

When someone asks me what being in the horse racing industry is like, I tell them that there is nothing comparable, that the range of emotion is so wide. The Arlington meet has been rough, but today helped make up for it with Surfer Rosa's amazing close to break her maiden.

This is the first win picture for the Arlington meet and it couldn't be any sweeter. Surfer galloped out extremely strong and 5 furlongs will be far from her best distance. Chuck will now keep an eye on her and see how she comes out of the race before we point towards her next start.
Mizz Liza came out of her race great and we will jump her in class and try an MSW on the lawn August 15th.
Gondorf had a minor foot issue and we gave him a little time. His foot is somewhat back to normal and he will target a MSW on the lawn August 27th.
Prospect Knight is getting closer to his debut and we changed tactics on The Magic Bus. Instead of targeting a 5/8's race where they tend to be run in bias fashion, we have decided to point to the 7 furlong race on August 22nd.
Rochelle Rochelle is back to training and looks great. Big Shake continues to progress and is working tomorrow.

Back to Square One
Well, there are few things more frustrating then when you put time, money and most importantly effort into something and end up back at Square One. That is pretty much where we are now as we have a barn full of maidens yet again.
Colonel Klink has been retired off of his dismal performance today. He just doesn't have it anymore and is being sent to the Illinois Equine Humane Center where he will be adapted out to a good home. They do unbelievable work at ILEHC and BGR strongly believes in doing what is right for these horses when they are telling you it is 'time'. If you are looking for a tax write off, toss them a donation as every little bit helps.
Surfer Rosa and Mizz Liza put in their last works for their respective debuts. Both horses worked well and we are looking forward to their starts late next week.
Tomorrow morning should be very exciting as we are orchestrating our own mini-race at 7:30am with some 2 year olds. Prospect Knight and The Magic Bus will be going in company with another 2 year old of Chucks (Joe the Dude) and an Austin K Smith horse (Wheemaway). Both Wheemaway and The Magic Bus have already worked together and we are looking for The Magic Bus to settle behind horses and finish strong. We should know where both 'Bus and 'Knight are at fitness-wise by 8am tomorrow.
Both Rochelle Rochelle and Gondorf are pointing towards their next starts.
BGR spoke to Arundel earlier in the week and all is well down in Kentucky with our foals and mares. Both foals are pretty close to being weened, especially Top Royelle's filly, she is a very large foal and has developed well. We actually nominated them to the Breeders Cup for a small fee as just in case we get lucky and have the opportunity to run in the BC, it beats coming up with 150k JUST TO RUN!
Congrats to our friend Don Bara who just won the last race at Arlington with his turf sprint warrior, Maneke.

Been awhile, Some Changes
Been awhile since our last blog entry, which doesn't mean there hasn't been some fireworks and some changes.
Appoint was sold to Chris Dorris and connections to solely run in Indiana. With us stabling at Arlington, and her three poor performances this year, the business decision was made to cull her from our roster.
Much to our surprise, we actually have a win at Arlington as Cool Clue technically won his first start here back in May, although we don't get a picture to remember it. July 4th the Illinois Racing Board gave sanctions to the leading trainer Nick Canani for a medication positive in May 6th race that Cool Clue finished 2nd in. This elevated us to 1st place and more drama as Cool Clue was claimed in his next start (3rd place finish on 5/28) by the Canani/Calabrese team. When he was run back, he actually won that race and was claimed out of that race by Mike Reavis. Because of the DQ from May 6th, Mike Reavis actually claimed a horse that is out of conditions.
Although it was bittersweet to see Cool Clue win off of the claim, looking back on the situation BGR made out pretty good on the whole thing.
Colonel Klink has continued to disappoint. With that disappointment comes the additional issues of not being able to race him because of the horse shortage at Arlington Park. We have entered him for two weeks and we were unable to get into a spot where he actually had a chance. Time is ticking with him though.
Gondorf has made three starts since the last blog entry. His 3 year old debut was decent only for him to come back and have an absolute horrendous trip in his 2nd start. He finished 2nd today to none other then the Calabrese/Canani combo in his best performance to date. He should be primed to break his maiden towards the end of July.
Big Shake arrived July 1st from Ocala and looked absolutely great. The only good thing about the heat down in Florida is that it keeps weight off horses. Shane Tripp has been a great addition to our team this year as every horse that has been sent up from him has looked amazing. Shake will hopefully be ready sometime in September.
Rochelle Rochelle made her Arlington debut towards the end of June and was affected by a rival's swishing tail most of the race. She finished good and we are looking for a route race the end of July or early August.
Mizz Liza has been working steadily for his 3 year old debut and has trained forwardly. She is slated for a start towards the end of July.
Surfer Rosa has also been working towards her debut and will be our first two year old to debut most likely the end of the July. The Magic Bus and Prospect Knight both continue to train and are slowly coming into their own.
The decision was made to keep Mr Mojo Risin down in Ocala with Shane as he just continues to grow and with that growth comes soreness. Albin has just gotten back to walking and we are hoping both horses will be ready for Tampa Bay Downs, starting January 1st.
Both broodmares are doing well with their respective pregnancies and both foals have been doing well. They are set to be weaned sometime around September.
Hopefully I will be able to post another entry with lots of good news towards the end of the month.

Its GO Time!
Everyone continues to do really well here at Arlington Park as we are steadily getting back to a normal amount of runners. All the horses look great and are training well for their prospective spots.
Cool Clue has been entered in the same condition off his 2nd place finish and looks to be in a decent spot. While the race has some horses dropping in class, Clue should be much fitter 2nd off his minor layoff and has looked great in the morning.
Colonel Klink is also being entered in the same condition on Memorial Day. He put in a really good 35.60 work this morning, which was meant to get him sharp. ET Baird has the call as we try and shake some things up with the big horse.
Appoint ran a disappointing 4th place finish yesterday at Indiana Downs. We are not sure what the future entails for the restricted stakes placed filly.
Gondorf continues to move forward to his turf debut on June 5th at Arlington Park. His work last week was very good considering we worked with an above average sprinter and we stayed with him, while we are a turf router. He is plenty fit and has his final work on Thursday before his debut in 11 days
Planning in this game is very hard as you are consistently analyzing where a horse is both mentally, physically and at a fitness level. We had planned to run Rochelle Rochelle this Sunday in what was going to be a 'turn the light on' type race for her next race going a route of ground. She just isn't ready and Chuck has decided he would rather train her up to a start in the middle of June.
Mizz Liza is almost ready to put in her first actual work as she has been galloping steadily for a month. She looks unbelievable, her coat is shiny and the time off has really let her mature into her body. She has turned into an absolutely massive filly.
The two year olds put in their first works over the Arlington surface. Chuck was ear to ear with how they went.
Surfer Rosa worked with a Smarty Jones colt of Chuck's and a Victory Gallop gelding trained by Austin Smith. She was on the rail and really dug in and galloped out strong. She looks the part and a possible end of June start in a sprint race.
The Magic Bus and Prospect Knight went in company which was suppose to be a 2f work but the clocker ended up getting it for 3 furlongs. They went absolutely great. Extremely professional when it came to lead changes and striding forward. The increased training for Prospect Knight has done him alot of good as he tends to play around alot in the mornings. While The Magic Bus loves looking at the video screen, we tell each other it is just so he can catch a glimpse of himself. Both will work on Saturday as they continue to gain experience and fitness towards starts sometime this summer.
Report from Shane in Ocala is that all three horses down there are doing good. Big Shake has been turned out at Shane's farm for 15 days. Mr Mojo Risin is doing much better and both him and Big Shake will arrive July 1st at Arlington. Albin continues to be on stall rest and should be getting his sutures out soon.
Should be an interesting next 12 days with races from Clue, Klink and unleashing Gondorf on the world. Hoping for a couple pictures.

Arlington starts off on right foot
Arlington's meet started off on the right foot as Cool Clue got us out of seats at the 1/4 pole in his first race since February. Cool Clue ranged up and ran 2nd to a 6/5 Frank Calabrese horse in what was a real good race off the short layoff. He will point for the same condition later in the month but going two turns this time. I uploaded some pictures from today's race on our photobucket page.
Three of our two year olds arrive tomorrow morning very early. The Magic Bus, Surfer Rosa and Prospect Knight. Mr Mojo Risin was scheduled to come up but Shane thought he would be better off staying and Prospect Knight coming up. He felt his ability to focus on him for two solid months would do him a world of good, and Prospect Knight has really improved from all aspects since being gelded. The Magic Bus continued to do well and Surfer Rosa has turned some heads as she has really advanced. Looking forward to getting to see these three train. It sounds like Surfer Rosa might be the first one ready sometime in June, as long as some of the typical baby issues don't flare up.
Colonel Klink is scheduled to be entered on Saturday for an IL bred 1 other than allowance race to be run on Thursday May 13th. He has been training particularly well in the mornings and we are eagerly awaiting his return to the Arlington polytrack. A good performance here could punch his ticket to Illinois Champions Day in the middle of June.
Appoint came out of her race in good order after finishing 5th in an open allowance race at Indiana Downs. She will go back to running with her friends and be entered in an Indiana bred non winners of 3 allowance race on May 26th. She will be dead fit for that spot.
Gondorf continues to impress in the mornings but also continues to be as big of a pain in the rear end as humanly possible. For the most part he is just a kid trying to have a little fun but he doesn't realize he is a 1300lb animal that could hurt somebody. He also has a major interest in Appoint and Rochelle Rochelle. His last two works have made Chuck smile and while we will probably miss the condition book that was released today, a mid June start for him looks promising.
Rochelle Rochelle is progressing from her major skin infection and has had three works so far. We are going to target a turf sprint for her towards the end of May which will get her nice and tight for a two turn race in June.
Mizz Liza has been a picture of health and she looks great while back to the grind of training. She just started galloping and will probably get some work in towards the end of month. She has really matured in a beautiful filly with alot of scope to her. Both her and Rochelle Rochelle are sired by Mizzen Mast, and they couldn't look any different. 'Liza is close to twice Rochelle's size.
Big Shake and Albin continues to progress in their rehab from their prospective injuries. Big Shake has been keen and walking in the mornings while Albin has still been on stall rest.
As for our broodmare and foal report, both the Johar filly and Dehere filly are reportedly doing well. Because of the bad weather in Kentucky on Derby week, they had to spend more time inside then they wanted to but they were able to get out and play this week. No news is good news with Top Royelle and Wundelia.

Settled in and getting ready
This is the time of year when transportation is plentiful. All of the racing outfits ship to their spring and summer locations and get ready to hopefully have a successful meeting, at their location of the trainer's choosing. Chuck has recently made Arlington Park a focal point of his racing operation, which is obviously one of the many reasons we have Chuck as our trainer. I was able to watch training today and took some pictures and one video of Gondorf galloping, uploads will be on our Youtube and Photobucket pages in the Gallery section of the website.
Colonel Klink came out of his dismisal Keeneland performance in good order. The polytrack at Keeneland was no where near the type of track he ran on last year at Arlington. He is gonna get some class relief and hopefully a confidence booster in his next start on May 2nd at Arlington Park. He looked great today training over the main track.
Cool Clue arrived from a quick stop over in Lexington and also looks good. While the Philly winter conditions took its toll on him, the return to Polytrack and some decent weather should do him some good. Chuck has spoken about getting him on the turf at some point. He is scheduled to run on May 6th in a mid level conditioned claiming race.
Appoint has never been a lazy horse in the morning and that has continued. With the cool mornings at Arlington, she has been on edge and training forwardly. She is scheduled to run at Indiana Downs on April 28th in an open allowance race. I am eagerly awaiting to see her perform and at the very least take another step to her first targeted race of the year, Indiana-bred allowance nw3 going two turns on 5/24.
Mizz Liza has returned back to training and has jogged around twice the last couple days. She really looks forward to feed time and looks great. She has really filled out and grown up.
Rochelle Rochelle has gotten over her nasty skin irritation that she had down in Ocala and has looked good in the morning. She has calmed down and matured mentally since last year. She will have her first work back on Thursday and we are targeting a late May return to the races for her.
Gondorf has a new nickname. "The Playboy" loves to stir up trouble by calling out to all the fillys in the barn and 'showing his stuff'. It tends to get some of them pretty fired up and ends up causing some harmless commotion. He is a very studdish colt and while gelding is an option, most Theatricals tend to be high strung anyways, he is gonna be fine. When on-track he listens to the rider and trains aggressively. He got his first look at the Arlington main track yesterday and really floated over the surface. While turf is obviously in his future, a chance over the polytrack is definitely an option. I have to admit that it is pretty entertaining seeing him in shed row, although I tend to be on the outside looking in. Chuck and I spoke today about potentially getting a seasoned jock to come and work with him a couple times a week as he is a horse that has some talent, he really just needs to figure it out between the ears.
Albin and Big Shake are recouping with Shane down in Ocala. Big Shake will arrive with Prospect Knight July 1st at Arlington and Albin depends on how he is healing.
Ocala has been quiet which is a good thing in regards to the babies. The Magic Bus, Mr Mojo Risin and Surfer Rosa are set to arrive at Arlington Park the first week of May.
Top Royelle and Wundelia have been confirmed 'in foal' to their prospective stallions. Top Royelle went to Cactus Ridge and Wundelia went to Yes Its True. Bob's Bean has been taken out of broodmare duty after her bout with colic and we are currently getting her healthy and working on finding her a home.
Top Royelle's foal has come around to human contact. She was skittish at first and has been doing alot better. Bob's Bean's foal unfortunately was transferred to a nurse mare after her mom had her bout with colic and has taken to her well.
Compared to weeks past, the last five days has gone great. All the BGR horses are going really well and have taken to their new surroundings great. Our new barn, 7C, is centrally located and even has some grazing areas that the horses have enjoyed. Arlington is less then 11 days away and really looking forward to the start of the meet. Hopefully some of our horses are also.

So you want to be a horse owner or trainer?
In speaking to Chuck this week, he said something that was very telling about owning and training horses. "So much has to go right and something so little can go wrong, and there goes 45 days when something does go wrong. People think this is so easy, from the outside, it is a piece a cake, and not until you are entrenched do people realize how difficult this business really is" Difficult is describing the last ten or so days for the BGR team nicely. We have had to have the intestinal fortitude of Takeru Kobayashi(hot dog eating champion) to handle it.
Both Big Shake and Albin were pointing to races 10 days ago and have now been shelved for 4-5 months. Chuck's assistant trainer, Cherie DeVaux, sensed something wrong with Big Shake after her routine overview of the horse that she does every morning. He had some 'slight' pressure in one of his front ankles. We have always, always taken the cautious approach in caring for these horses, it is a core belief for both myself and Chuck. We went ahead and took some X-rays and it ended up being a non-displaced chip. While in surgery, they took a picture of the other ankle for comparsion purposes and found a chip in that ankle and took that out also. His surgery went great and he has been sent to Shane Tripp's farm and will go through the normal recovery process under his watchful eye. He should have a 100% recovery and while there is no way to tell if it has affected his performance, he should be better off in the long run. We are hoping for an Arlington start in September for him.
Albin worked the other day in which was described as his best work since our exercise rider, Rusty, has gotten on him. He came back to the barn, cooled out great, bathed and turned out, only for him to see him 'off' in his turnout paddock. X-rays revealed a hairline fracture of his rear cannon bone. The emotion of having Chuck call me and say about how great he worked and hear the excitement in his voice, only to get another call literally 3 hours later with this news, well you can imagine it. His surgery went great and he is now Big Shake's stablemate at Shane's. He should also have a 100% recovery, but no timetable has been set for his return.
Today was the kicker as we had a feeling something was going to happen going by the "everything happens in 3's" belief, I just wish it wasn't as serious as it was. Bob's Bean colic'd this morning in what was called a mild case. She was ok'd by her vet to go ahead and be bred today and while she was getting ready to be bred to Notional at Spendthrift Farm, she colic'd again and was rushed to the equine hospital. I was called and was told she needed to have surgery or she would have to be euthanized because of the pain she was suffering. Surgery was chosen, but imagine having that slammed on you on moments notice. She is reported to be doing well after surgery and she is gonna get some R&R this year. Unfortunately this will mean she will not be able to nurture her newly born Johar Filly and a nurse mare will be brought in to care for her.
Soooooo, onto the other healthy horses :) What a last ten days.
Appoint came out of her race in great shape. She just started to get going when she crossed the finish line in the 6.5 furlong sprint and was close to impossible to pull up. While her running line looks bad, it was a great result for us as this was a prep race for an open route race towards the end of April at Indiana Downs. Because of her Indiana bred status, we will run for 25% bonus on the purse, and this will set her up perfectly for a win in her next start on May 24th.
Rochelle Rochelle has been training forwardly, Chuck has been real happy with Gondorf's feet as they have been trouble free since being re shod and Mizz Liza is on light duty until she arrives next week at Arlington.
Because of the rash of injuries, we have decided to bring Cool Clue back to Arlington Park for this summer. While the purses are lower here at Arlington, he would be a local runner and his best race to date, speed figure wise, was routing at Keeneland, on the same surface as Arlington has installed. He should be the useful type here and hopefully we can win a couple races with him here.
Colonel Klink runs tomorrow at Keeneland in what is a salty open non-winners of one allowance race. His best race to date was sprinting on the polytrack at Arlington when he broke his maiden last year, and we believe he wants every piece of the 7 furlong distance. This is a big test for the huge Military gelding. While we feel he is a real good IL bred, a good performance in this spot would open up a plethora of spots. At the very least he will be ready and in form come Arlington's opening week.
As for the two year olds, we got some good news this week as Surfer Rosa surprised Shane with a 24.2 work out of the gate. I spoke with Shane about 3 weeks ago and he was a little 'down' on how she was training. He said when the weather started to get warmer that she really turned around and was a little shocked at her performance yesterday. She was suppose to go around 28.0 so that was great to hear. The Magic Bus continues to turn eyes even though Shane tries to keep me in check in regards to expectations. Both Mr Mojo Risin and Prospect Knight have really improved after they were gelded and have been training alot better.
The horses can't get to Arlington fast enough right now, they are set to arrive in about 6 days on Wednesday. Gondorf, Appoint, Mizz Liza, and Rochelle Rochelle will be on Wednesday's shipment, and Colonel Klink and Cool Clue will be on Thursday's truck.

Calm before the Storm
Anticipation, anxiety and restlessness are all ways to describe what is going on with Bob Gary Racing recently. It is a certain calmness before what should be a hectic, entertaining and fun next 6 months. We are in that unique timeframe where Arlington Park is 30 days away from opening, yet it can't get here fast enough. Winning at Arlington Park is special because it is considered home and it is also the racetrack program that BGR is built upon. All of our horses fit specific conditions that are run at Arlington frequently and we are hoping that the 5 month Arlington meet is a fruitful one.
Appoint's race was not used by the Tampa Bay Downs racing office and has been brought back for April 2nd. There is also an open claiming race going 6.5 furlongs that might fit her that day for what is only a prep before she invades Indiana Downs near the end of April.
Colonel Klink prepared for his Keeneland start with a 1:00 five furlong work that was described as 'great' from Chuck. While Keeneland is always a tough place to run at, the return to polytrack and an extra 2 furlongs should benefit him greatly, and also set him up perfectly for Arlington.
Big Shake and Albin are both coming off very good races and pointed towards early April starts. Big Shake is pointed towards an April 10th start while Albin is on the fence for his next start, which is dependent on Arlington's first condition book. Targets are a 50nw2 race at Tampa on April 16th and if Chuck is feeling confident there is also a race at Gulfstream (allowance nw2) on April 11th. There is also potential of giving him a minor break to have a fresh horse for Arlington, especially if there is a race early in the first book for him. Lets go with this condition book Arlington Park! :)
Rochelle Rochelle and Gondorf are back in full training after minor aliments. Rochelle is pointed to the first MSW for 3 year old fillies in the Arlington condition book and Gondorf should be ready in late May, early June.
Graphite Halo is set to join Cool Clue with the Philly Park string in early April. She has been training well and pointed towards an April 23rd return to the race, at the old school racetrack, Atlantic City Race Course. Cool Clue was a touch winter sore and has bounced back. The Philly string had some setbacks with the changing weather and should be back to normal soon. Cool Clue should have a start sometime within the next 15 days.
Mizz Liza got a favorable report from Dr. Ferguson last week and has been able to be turned out now. She will return to full training when she arrives at Arlington Park.
The two year olds are all progressing the way we would want. Maturity is gonna be the theme for this year. The Magic Bus continues to show class and talent in the mornings. Mr Mojo Risin is starting to realize that he has some talent and that he is flashy. Prospect Knight has calmed down since he has lost his 'jewels' and Surfer Rosa, which immature, has moved forward. They will be arriving at Arlington Park the first week of May.
Bob's Bean produced a classy Johar filly (pictures in Gallery) in mid Feb. Mom and foal are doing good and are back at Arundel Farm. Top Royelle just visited Cactus Ridge in the breeding shed and her Dehere filly has really improved from the attitude side recently. Wundelia is a week away from having some fun with Yes Its True.
As always, April is one of those months in the industry that has promise to be entertaining with all of the Kentucky Derby preps, flowers blossoming in the North while the tracks prepare for the invasion of the connections from the winter tracks and most importantly the future of people's stables arrive from remedial training. Looking forward to it.

Richwood Claimed, Shake runs big!
Interesting last couple days with the BGR camp as we have gone through our first horse being claimed. Richwood Silver was dropped to the bottom at Philly Park to gain some confidence after two disappointing performances. Unfortunately she didn't perform how we expected yet again. Part of this business is running in races where other people can 'claim' or buy your horse. She was 'claimed' by Robert Reid for $5,000. We hope she gets back to her better form for her new connections and she is well taken care of. Thank you Richwood for running your rear end off almost every time for us.
Big Shake decided he wanted to be a racehorse today at Tampa Bay Downs. Being hung out wide the entire race, he stayed on strong to only be beaten by 2.75 lengths. Diego rode a great race considering the circumstances and it was great to see Big Shake put in a what will come back to be a very good performance, numbers-wise.
Cool Clue and Albin are pointing towards their next races within the coming week. Cool Clue will be pointed towards a nw2 6.5 furlong race and Albin is being entered in a route turf race.
Colonel Klink is ramping up for his April 9th Keeneland start. He will ship to Keeneland a couple days before that start.
Gondorf, Mizz Liza, and Rochelle Rochelle are all making their way back after some time off. Look for Rochelle Rochelle to be ready first (early April), Gondorf to be ready towards the middle of May, and Mizz Liza to be ready in June.
Graphite Halo and Appoint continue to prepare for spring campaigns. Graphite Halo will most likely not be ready until she ships to Philly Park. Both Philly and Delaware Park will be options for her. Appoint will have a prep race at Tampa Bay Downs before she readys for her Indiana campaign. Indiana Downs first condition book should be out relatively soon.
We have decided that Mr Mojo Risin and Prospect Knight will benefit greatly by being gelded. Both have been focusing a little more on the ladies and also becoming a little tough to handle while they become fitter. The Magic Bus continues to do well and Surfer Rosa continues to develop.
Bob's Bean is ready to burst with her Johar foal. She is currently still in Illinois. Top Royelle has been sent back to Kentucky to Arundel Farm with her Dehere filly. Both mare and filly are doing well. Top Royelle will be going back to Cactus Ridge this spring. Wundelia is getting ready to go to Yes Its True.

Back to back wins!
Following Cool Clue's maiden breaking performance at Philly, Albin decided it was time to break his. Getting what was a perfect ride, Albin wore down a tough first time starter to win by about a half length. He still hasn't completely 'settled' in a race and if he ever figures that out, he should be a very useful type. Albin will point for a mid March race at Tampa, and should he run well in that spot, a potential shot at Keeneland is in the works.
Cool Clue has had his training interupted by weather and will be pointing towards a mid March start.
Richwood Silver is by far the most unlucky horse within our barn. She has already had a race cancelled on her back in December after Philly Park got 30 inches of snow, and today her race was cancelled as the jocks did not like the surface. While it is certainity understood why jocks refuse to ride, it sure is frustrating, especially when it happens to the SAME horse!
Colonel Klink made his return to the races and while his finish position wouldn't indicate a success, it was an overwhelming success. First, he came out of the race in great shape, for a horse off over 240 days, that is how you want them to come out. 2ndly, he gained alot from the race, thus the reason for us to take a chance at Keeneland on April 9th, going 7 furlongs. After that race, he should be set up perfectly for opening week at Arlington.
Rochelle Rochelle is getting over a virus and should be back in full training this week, a potential late March return is in the works.
Gondorf continues to remind me of a 11 year old boy. Not only is he full of personality, he is always getting minor scrapes or nagging missteps, all while showing he is trying to be a sucessful individual. It seems the quarter crack has been put to bed, and we are hoping for him to make his turf debut at Arlington in May.
Appoint has been impressive off the layoff in her first two works back. Chuck made a comment with his typical facial impression that when you layoff a sore horse you get that horse back to normal, but when you layoff a sound horse, you get an improved horse. Laying off our horses when sound continues to be a part of our program, and the addition of the Classic Mile will benefit that layoff technique in the future. Appoint continues to progress for a race towards the end of March at Tampa, which should get her nice and tight for Indiana Downs, which opens April 16th.
We had a chance to go out to Oak Ridge Training Center and see the babies, and watch them train. While we never had this opportunity in the past, it was great to see what goes into the stages of a horse's career. Shane Tripp has taken over this stage for us and the horses couldn't look any better. It is hard not to get excited having seen how horses like Mr Mojo Risin and The Magic Bus look. Both Surfer Rosa and Prospect Knight have shown some quality and will continue to grow into their frames. Shane has praised how all four are doing, each of them sound and progressing daily. They will stay with Shane until May 1st, where all four will ship to Arlington Park for the summer.

Cool Clue Wins!! Klink Returns!
Excitement within the BGR camp has grown as Cool Clue broke his maiden on Saturday. Going off as the 2/1 co-favorite, he sat 2nd off a runaway 70/1 and cruised to the lead on the backside and never looked back, providing BGR their first win of 2010.
Colonel Klink hopefully makes his 4 year old debut and return to the races at Tampa on Saturday February 20th. We are hoping his campaign starts strong in what should be a very productive year. He has actually filled out and muscled up what was already a massive frame and at the very least, will be the most intimidating horse in the race!
Albin also runs on Friday in what is his 3rd start of the year. His last race, a 4th on the dirt, came as a surprise and should have him razor sharp. Time to break your maiden big guy.
Keeneland's condition book came out a couple days ago and both Klink and Albin have races circled, hopefully they can progress and make it happen.
Rochelle Rochelle and Richwood Silver both put in what we are considering puzzling performances. Rochelle came out of the race a little banged up and will point towards a March 5th start. We are still evaluating Richwood but we are targeting a race on Feb 27th if everything checks out for her.
Big Shake ran a surprising 6th the other day at Tampa in an off the turf effort. He was making a middle move until he got stopped cold and unable to sustain the rally. More importantly he was engaged early on which has been a bit of an issue, and he should relish a return to the lawn and some more distance, which comes up on March 6th at Tampa.
Gondorf continues to be a horse that we have to take baby steps with, both physically and mentally. Over his minor issue he has been training and there is hope of an late March start on the Tampa lawn. Mizz Liza has been given 60 days off and will start training again when they arrive back at Arlington.
Appoint and Graphite Halo continue to progress towards their 4 year old debut. Appoint will be racing primarily at Indiana Downs and Hoosier Park, and Graphite Halo will be shipping to Philadelphia Park to run there, Delaware Park (5/24 is perfect spot for her), and hopefully the NY circuit.
Top Royelle produced her first foal in downstate Illinois on Sunday, a big Dehere filly. Both mare and foal are doing good and both will ship back to Arundel Farm in Paris, KY by the end of February.
The 2 year olds (Mr Mojo Risin, The Magic Bus, Surfer Rosa, Prospect Knight) are all moving forward on a day to day basis. Both Mojo and Rosa will most likely ship up to Arlington with Chuck's regular string in Mid April. Bus and Knight will arrive early to mid May. All have grown like you would like them to and filled out. Rosa should be early, Mojo is a sharp looking individual, Bus has all the class in the world and Knight is kinda like high school pitcher with the 84 MPH fastball but is more focused on the basketball cheerleaders and doing beer bongs.
Just some more characters to add to what is already an interesting group of personalities.

BGR Update
The 2010 year started off with good runs from Rochelle Rochelle, Richwood Silver, and Cool Clue.
Clue finished 2nd to a runaway (~16 lengths) winner ship in from New York and should be sitting on a winning race towards of the end of January.
Rochelle Rochelle race was rained off the turf and she finished a real good 2nd in what is probably her least preferred surface. At Tampa, if you enter in a turf race and it is rained off, and you still run in that race, you get assigned a 'SPC' date, which means we control our own destiny for her next start. She is another that gained alot from that effort and she should be tough in her next start, which should be around the first week in February.
Richwood Silver ran in a sprint race for the first time that Chuck has trained her. We were entering her in route races for over 40 days without any success. The one race she did get into was snowed out by what was the biggest snow storm in Philadelphia in years. For running at her least preferred distance, she was only 1.75 lengths from the 1st place horse and she should another that will be in peak condition for her next start, which will hopefully be towards the end of January.
Albin has been entered for a 8 furlong MSW turf race on Sunday January 17th. He is another that should have benefited greatly from his last start and should perform much better.
Mizz Liza and Colonel Klink are progressing well for their return efforts. Klink had a very good work (48.80), which was deemed spectacular from Chuck. Liza has proved to be quite the fussy one in the mornings but she has shown some talent and trains forwardly. There is a couple races for Klink at both Gulfstream and Tampa towards the last week of January/first week of February.
Graphite Halo and Appoint have been jogging and getting reacquainted with track life after having some time off. Gondorf has been dealing with some minor aliments and is pretty close to returning to full training.
Shane Tripp now has all four two year olds (Mr Mojo Risin, Surfer Rosa, Prospect Knight, The Magic Bus) with him in Ocala. All four are done with the breaking process and are now learning how to be racehorses. Prospect Knight's 3/4 brother (Ricky Tick) is pointing towards opening week at Oaklawn in an allowance race. Ricky Tick is the first foal out of Prospect Knight's dam. Good luck to those connections as they try the Derby Trail.
